Covenanters Grave, Caldons
Inside the wall shown in NX3978 : Covenanters Grave at Caldons is the gravestone of 6 Covenanters shot at this site in 1685. The gravestone is reputed to be the first to be erected by the stonemason Robert Paterson, known as "Old Mortality", who in the second half of the 18th century devoted 40 years of his life to travelling round the south of Scotland carving memorials to the Covenanting martyrs who had died during the "Killing Times" 100 years before.
