This is the large subterranean chamber at Yester Castle. It is 37 feet long by 13 feet wide & 19 feet high. This is unique in Scotland. Built in the 13th century it was constructed of ashlar blocks and the pointed stone vaulted roof has massive close set ribs. Altogether remarkable for its time it was believed that the builder,Sir Hugo de Gifford, had supernatural powers.A legend that Sir Walter Scott uses in 'Marmion'. The scant remains of the castle above ground are all that now remains following Cromwell's 'visit'.
