Andover - Sculpture
This Viking Longboat commemorates the story of Olaf the Viking, whose invasion of south coast played a large part in the history of Andover and England as a whole.
In 994 AD Olaf caused such terror that King Ethelred. whose Royal Court was at Winchester, offered Olaf £16,000 in Danegeld with which Ethelred tried to secure the safety of the nation. In return Olaf was confirmed as a Christian by Bishop Alphege at the church in Andover and gave his word that he would never return to England as an enemy again.
Olaf became King of Norway and used his influence to spread the Christian word.
