A lichen - Physcia aipolia
This is a common species that is often found on branches and twigs; the large spore-producing discs (apothecia) are a prominent feature.

This specimen was growing on a branch right beside the cycle route. This species prefers near-neutral bark (the bark of many trees is markedly acidic), but trees near tracks (especially farm tracks) are often exposed to lime-rich dust that can act to neutralize the acidity of bark to some extent.

For other Physcia species, see: NS3678 : A lichen - Physcia adscendens.
