NY8767 : Erected by the Pelican Band of Mercy

taken 17 years ago, near to Newbrough, Northumberland, England

Erected by the Pelican Band of Mercy
Erected by the Pelican Band of Mercy
... 5 January 1889. Inscription on the stone behind the NY8767 : 19th C cast iron water hydrant.

I am very grateful to Dave Clark for the following info:

The beginnings of The Band of Mercy are documented in "History in Portsmouth" in an article entitled 'REV. THOMAS TIMMINS (1841–1898) - FOUNDER OF THE BAND OF MERCY' LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
Dave is not sure about the "Pelican" annotation.

Apparently the Band of Mercy was the forerunner of Animal Liberation Front (ALF). A part of their history that the RSPCA will not be proud is at LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
