Before reaching the sand and the sea, Southport Pier bridges over Marine Drive.
Southport Pier

The pier, although shortened in 1897 compared with its fullest extent in 1868, is still Britain's second longest, after Southend on Sea, with a length of approximately 1 kilometre. The gradual receding of the shoreline since it was built in 1860 means that even at a spring high tide no more than half its length is above water, and at extreme low tide the sea can be up to 3 kilometres beyond the present pier end.

The pier is listed grade 2 (list entry 1379746) although I am surprised it is not at least grade 2* given its historical interest.
