Scots pine on the heath, Acres Down, New Forest
An isolated Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) tree on the dry heath at Acres Down. The only native British pine species, it was introduced to the New Forest in 1776. It tolerates the poor soils on the heath. The Moon can be seen to the left of the photo - one day after its first quarter.
