This is 1 of 8 images, with title Thirlmere in this square
A view towards the slopes of Helvellyn from the northwestern corner of the lake. Thirlmere was created by the construction of a dam in 1894 to provide water for Manchester. There were previously two small lakes. The water makes its way to Heaton Park in Manchester purely by virtue of gravity. The lake is almost completely surrounded by forestry.
