Looking west up Hatton Locks on a frosty winter day. This view is from the bridge at the middle lock: there are ten locks below here and ten above, a total of 21. The upper ten (of which six can be seen in the photo) are closely grouped and were known to the canal boatmen as 'the thick of Hatton'. The lower ten were spread between longer intervening pounds of water.
