Waxham New Cut and Brograve drainage mill
Waxham New Cut and Brograve drainage mill
Brograve drainage mill is located on Brograve Levels, beside the New Waxham Cut. Constructed of red brick this tower mill was built in 1771 by Sir Berney Brograve, 1st Baronet (1726-1797) for the purpose of draining the Brograve Levels into the Waxham New Cut. The mill once had a boat-shaped cap with a petticoat and an 8-bladed fantail with a tailpole, and it carried two pairs of patent shuttered sails which powered an internal turbine pump. It is believed to have been disused since the 1930s. Today only two stocks and two stubs of the original sails remain and the derelict and unsafe structure is leaning westwards.

Tradition links the mill with the wild and unpopular Baronet Sir Berney Brograve (1726-97), one of those landed gentry about whom all manner of unlikely tales seem to have gathered over the centuries. It is said that on stormy nights he, like his ancestors before him, can be seen riding between Worstead and his manor at Waxham. Sir Berney, so the story continues, wagered his soul that he could out-mow the devil over two acres of bean plants. It may have been while the devil was trying to claim it that Sir Berney is said to have hidden in Brograve mill and the story explains that the mill leans heavily to the westward as a result of Old Nick trying to blow it down to get at him.

According to another local tale the drainage mill subsided and was straightened five times and consequently called the Devil's Mill; the miller was believed to have been a necromancer.
