Granite and Groynes, East Worthing, West Sussex
A quick look at the clear satellite pictures on Google Maps shows that these huge boulders have been deposited on a 50m stretch of beach where the road comes very close to the shingle, and a distinct mini headland exists, vulnerable to wave attack from the south east.
Erosion and long-shore drift have long been dealt with by the maintenance of wooden groynes built out from the top of the beach. In recent years huge boulders of granite (from Norway) and limestone (from the Mendips) have been added, to reduce the likelihood of erosion undercutting the coastal road in various places.
Worthing Pier is seen here, about three quarters of a mile (1.2km) distant.
