Swanswell Gate
1. Coventry city wall
The city wall was a little over 2 miles in circumference when completed in 1534. Having taken 180-200 years in construction, it was not primarily a defensive structure. Charles II ordered it to be rendered indefensible in 1662 and much of it was subsequently demolished and the stone used as a building source. The gates survived into the late eighteenth century, when all but the two surviving gates were removed.
The city wall remains are listed as a scheduled ancient monument.
