Stokesay Castle
This 13th-century fortified manor house with its Jacobean gatehouse lies in the Onny valley just south of Craven Arms.
Stokesay Castle

The splendid Stokesay Castle near Craven Arms is one of the finest surviving fortified manor houses extant in Britain. Dating from the end of the C13th it was lived in until the C19th. The charming gatehouse was added in the late C16th or early C17th which is probably also the date of the unusual half-timbered structure attached to the northern end of the old walls. The site including tower, hall, gatehouse and grassed enclosure are encircled by a moat. It is a very attractive building, which was saved by the intervention of glove manufacturer and MP, John Derby Allcroft in 1869 who realised its importance and restored it. It has been in the care of English Heritage since 1992.
Note: The E H listing suggests a date 100 years later (viz 1391-1400) than that given by the other sources (including other EH sites) and I think that it is a mistake in the listing as the earlier date would fit the architecture.
