It's that Angel again!
It's that Angel again!
The iconic 'Angel of the North' was erected in 1999 on the site of hilltop reservoirs for the former Team Colliery and is within view of thousands of vehicles travelling every day on the A1 and from trains on the main railway line south of Newcastle. Commissioned by Gateshead Council at a cost of 2 million to a design by Antony Gormley. As an engineering tour de force and problems in its location, several firms were involved in its construction: Hartlepool Steel Fabrications, Ove Arup (consulting engineers), Newcastle University, and Thomas Armstrong Construction Ltd. (near Workington on Cumbria coast). It is made from weathering steel (Cor-ten steel), a particular formulation of alloy that forms a protective rust-like layer on its surface under the influence of the weather. The statue stands 20 metres tall and has a wingspan of 54 metres. It weighs 200 tonnes and is designed to withstand winds in excess of 100 mph.
