Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve
Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve
Covering most of the area between the harbour and Seaford Road, the A259. It is also part of a pay off to develop a new access road to the port as well as a business park the area having a long history as a wetland and at various times the Ouse itself followed a course that bought it over to the eastern side of the flood plain on its way to the medieval mouth at Seaford. Centuries of reclamation and river diversion mean the Ouse is now on the western side though the flood plain remains and since 1993 there has a been a partial return to its origins though part remains grazing land and this section known as a washland has been left to retain water when it is needed. The nature reserve itself has been opened since about 2005 and has dedicated all weather footpaths and cycle tracks going through it.
