A68 switchback
The A68 runs from near Darlington to Edinburgh by an inland route avoiding the major towns of the north-east. Through Northumberland, the line of the modern road coincides largely with the alignment of Dere Street
Link , the Roman road that ran from York to the Firth of Forth. Being a straight road of Roman origin in an upland area, it makes no concessions to topography but follows a switchback course of sudden crests and dips. This at High Cowden is the most sudden crest in the entire length of the road.
