The Wasteland
The Wasteland
The site of Monktonhall Colliery, the last deep mine in the Lothians. New in 1953, it was plagued by flooding and closed in 1998. The Gazetteer for Scotland [LinkExternal link] notes that the site has no tourist rating; there were, however, three buzzards soaring there, no doubt hunting for rabbits, which were plentiful.
