West Haigh Wood
West Haigh Wood is an ancient woodland (in existence since before 1600). It is mentioned in charters 1336, 1342, 1360 and 1545 (Smith, 1961). Boundaries of the woodland are represented by extensive sections of historic wood-bank to the west and south. Some sections of this wood-bank are very complex and probably ‘multi-phase’ (i.e. created at different distinct periods of time), confirming the ancient nature of the wood and continuity of the majority of is present boundary, from at least medieval or possibly Anglo-Saxon times.
