SO4522 : Dovecot, Garway, with 666 nesting spaces
taken 17 years ago, near to Garway, County of Herefordshire, England

Dovecot, Garway, with 666 nesting spaces
Over the narrow doorway is a triangular, weathered tympanum with faded inscription which has been translated as, 'In the year of our Lord 1326 this dove-cote was made by Brother Richard de Biri.'
In 'Knights Templar & Hospitaller in Herefordshire', Audrey Tapper relates some facts and figures: "with an internal diameter of 17 feet 6 inches and walls 3 feet 10 inches thick. Arranged around the interior walls, in 19 rows are 666 L-shaped nesting spaces with landing ledges, each large enough for two parent birds and two chicks."
NB This dovecot is on private ground and I was escorted there by a local guide.
