SN7890 : Hyddgen Lead Mine

Hyddgen Lead Mine
Hyddgen Lead Mine
There are a number of abandoned lead mines near Hyddgen Link on both sides of the river. They used to work the same mineral vein as the much larger mining complex at Dylife Link. Mining for lead and copper began in 1873 but the site was abandoned within a few years, although a leat, waterwheel and tramway had been built to support the works LinkExternal link. Traces of these remain, such as the remnants of the tramway pictured here. The site description on Coflein states rather worryingly,
"Although [...] not visible in the field, there must be an obscured shaft at this location, in view of the presence of three spoil tips" LinkExternal link.
