Selby Street, Hull
Selby Street, Hull
Selby Street, Hull, looking northeast towards Doncaster Street and the Anlaby Road flyover. Roadworks count as an event on Selby Street these days. Bounded on the northwest side by the railway line and on the southeast by the functional but dull kind of housing which was thrown up in areas flattened by bombing during World War Two. The most boring street in the city? It might well have been... were it not for the actions of a young sociopath called Bruce Lee (born Peter Dinsdale) who admitted to killing 26 people between June 1973 and December 1979 after setting fire to homes in and around Selby Street while the occupants were asleep. Lee was charged with manslaughter and ordered to be detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act, and eleven of the charges were eventually quashed because of doubts about his testimony. When Lee's crimes came to light they went almost unnoticed by the national press, possibly because the trial of Yorkshire Ripper was happening at the same time. Lee was born in Manchester on July 31st 1960. He was twelve years old at the time of the first fire.
