NT6087 : Tree mallow, Bass Rock

taken 11 years ago, 3 km from Auldhame, East Lothian, Great Britain

Tree mallow, Bass Rock
Tree mallow, Bass Rock
Like the canopy of a rainforest, this is one of the few remaining areas of vegetation on the Bass Rock, a corner by the castle, probably too low and sheltered to be attractive to nesting gannets. The tree mallow is a long established plant on the island, but is causing big problems on neighbouring Craigleith, inhibiting nesting puffins.
