1960s Town houses, Emscote Gardens
A local firm, AC Lloyd, included these 3-storey flat-roofed terraced town houses in several 1960s developments in Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth. They were "built for a pin" according to one surveyor. A novel feature was the first-floor living room, kitchen and dining space. The houses had open frontages and integral garages, and originally had single-glazed metal windows and timber weatherboarding on the fronts. Most owners have by now opted for uPVC for both; some have added porches, and the modest garages tend to be either full of stuff or converted into downstairs kitchens. They are difficult to insulate and some insurance companies are nervous about the flat roofs. They have proved adaptable for different-sized households and they remain relatively cheap.
