This was laid by the chaiman of 'The Committee' (which one?), Alderman William Brear JP, on August 9th 1904, and was unveiled by Major Sir Leslie Rundle KCB on 7th November 1904 (from Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion). There is also a stone recording the name of the builders, I Firth and Son's (is this an early example of an erroneous apostrophe?).
