SH2992 : The White Ladies of Carmel Head

taken 16 years ago, 3 km from Llanfairynghornwy, Isle of Anglesey/Sir Ynys Mon, Wales

The White Ladies of Carmel Head
The White Ladies of Carmel Head
The two White Ladies on the main land stand in line with a third beacon on West Mouse islet. I've heard it said that these were navigational aids for aircraft in WWII. They may well have been used thus, but they are certainly much older and are shown on the 1st Edition of the 1":1mile OS map of 1840. Their purpose apparently was to help ships navigate safely past a hidden reef known as Coal Rock which lies a little to the north of the West Mouse islet.
