Carnon Viaduct
The old masonry piers of Brunel's original viaduct stand alongside the later viaduct over the Carnon valley on the Falmouth branch line. The piers supported wooden trellises which carried the railway - quicker and cheaper to build than stone but costlier to maintain. Many such examples can be found in Cornwall and are commonly referred to as "Brunel's stumps".
