NZ0614 : The drop everyone forgets, Abbey Rapids

taken 20 years ago, near to Barnard Castle, County Durham, England

The drop everyone forgets, Abbey Rapids
The drop everyone forgets, Abbey Rapids
The main action of the River Tees' Abbey Rapids happens just above the bridge, after which there is a deep and slow flowing section in the gorge. There are, however, a couple more waves and drops which tend to take people by surprise as they have relaxed a little too soon. This one, in particular, at higher flows, has a tendency to backloop shorter boats and be a bit meaty to play on. The paddlers shown here are actually playing on a small wave a bit nearer the camera than the main drop.
