Thwaite Beck footbridge
Walkers on the south bank of the River Greta between Rutherford and Brignall cross Thwaite Beck on this substantial footbridge. The footpath to Thwaite is on the near bank off to the photographer's right. The continuing footpath along the riverbank is no longer where the map shows it, having been diverted by statutory order to climb up to the right at the far end of the footbridge and continue along the field edge at the top of the steep bank. "Follow the waymarks" says the sign, but there are none (instead are at least two misleading stiles) and one must find one's own way to regain the old path at the main crossing of the Greta 300m to the east. Walkers trying to continue on the old path will soon encounter fallen trees and a landslip which make progress very hard work and, in wet weather, probably unsafe.
