NZ0409 : Declining woodland

taken 16 years ago, near to East Hope, County Durham, England

Declining woodland
Declining woodland
This wooded area northeast of East Hope is in decline owing to being unfenced and heavily grazed - sheep are as happy to eat tree seedlings as grass and the grass in the unimproved pasture next to the woods is certainly pretty poor. With no new trees to replace them, the oldest trees have died and are decaying on the edges of the wood.
