Inside the Dark Age Hall NT9433 : Maelmin - reconstruction of 'dark age' hall. This weaving on the inside of the roof is called 'fleeking', an ancient technique used to support the thatch instead of timber battens. The fleeking is made from water-reed - the thatch-bundles which are laid over it provide both rain-proofing and insulation. See alsoNT9433 : Thatch detail.
