TQ6349 : The Maltings, High Street, Hadlow, KentI think the name of the brewery was Kenwood and Court. I will upload a photo of a beer bottle at the weekend.
During the conversion (this would have been 86/87) my cat got himself lost in the disused brewery. As I stood there looking up into the empty building, listening to his plaintive cries, a police car drew up and a lady officer asked me what I was up to. After I'd told her the story she considered the matter carefully, explained tresspass to me but added she was going away now and wouldn't be back for a couple of hours.
Reading between the lines I set about rescuing puss. I recall entering one building, going up a stone staircase, crossing a covered wooden bridge, and then making may way up the floors via a series of vertical ladders. This was all in the dark and I had to feel my way carefully to avoid holes in the floor etc. I also remember seeing a number of vertical "hopper lifts" where strings of small hoppers were used to lift material up through the floors.
Once I'd succesfully located the cat we made our way back down the ladders, across the bridge, down the staircase and out onto the road (without a police lady in sight!)
Of course I wouldn't recommend tresspass to anyone and I'm sure these days the site would be much more secure, but it does seem strange to think that I was clambering about in what are now peoples front rooms...................................
