SK9934 : St.Peter's church, Ropsley, Lincs

taken 18 years ago, near to Ropsley, Lincolnshire, England

St.Peter's church, Ropsley, Lincs.
A very good church, even by Lincolnshire standards. Early English tower with Decorated broach spire, but see the roofline of an earlier Anglo-Saxon nave, a clue confirmed by 'long and short' stonework. There's a 3 bay Norman north arcade and early English south arcade and a Decorated clerestory. Above the porch dated 1486 reads "Hac non vade via nisi dicas Ave Maria" ... a hexameter that translates to 'Do not come this way without saying an Ave Maria'
