NY5764 : Pike Hill Tower on Hadrian's Wall

taken 17 years ago, near to Banks, Cumbria, England

Pike Hill Tower on Hadrian's Wall
Pike Hill Tower on Hadrian's Wall
The tower is about 200m east of NY5764 : Turret 52a (Banks East). The tower was just over 6m square and, uniquely on the Wall, stood on a platform of mortared rubble with substantial foundations. The masonry of the tower was dressed to a higher standard than the turrets of the Wall. The tower lies at 45° to the Wall; the ditch to the north follows the line of the Wall and the tower in the same zig-zag pattern. {Source: "Handbook to the Roman Wall" (14th Edition) by J Collingwood Bruce.}
