Carman Hill-fort: line of inner enclosure
See NS3779 : Ancient hill-fort on Carman Hill for the main description of the hill-fort. Click on the end-note title for related pictures, and see the annotated satellite view linked from the end-note as an index to these pictures and their positions in the fort.
This photo shows part of the boundary of the inner enclosure, in the form of a ridge. This is a view along it in a counter-clockwise direction; the wall leads directly away from the photographer's position at first, but then curves to the left before it can reach the much more recent dry-stone wall.
At the point where the photograph was taken, on the south-western side of the inner enclosure, there is a gap in the wall: note the rounded end of the wall here, and the way in which it slopes down to ground level near the bottom edge of the image; there was a similar feature immediately behind the photographer's position. This gap is thought to be the location of an original entrance to the inner enclosure.
