Anticline at Ardmore Point
Anticline at Ardmore Point
A number of interesting geological features are visible on the beach at Ardmore Point.

[At the time of writing, a free leaflet called "The Geology of Ardmore Point", which describes these features, was available from local libraries and tourist information centres, and online.]

One of these features is the anticline that is shown in this photo, and in a later picture: NS3178 : Anticline at Ardmore Point. In an anticline, layers of rock have been up-folded, forming an arch-like shape. (Down-folding to form a trough-like shape results in a syncline; an example is visible not far away on the same beach: NS3178 : Syncline at Ardmore Point.)

In this case, the central portion has been eroded away, but the slope of the rocks on the left and the right makes it easy to visualize how their layers would originally have been linked into a single folded structure.

[This panoramic view was created by stitching together several photos. For an oblique view of the same area, see: NS3178 : Anticline at Ardmore Point.]
