Plaque to Sandy Mackendrick
Mackendrick is commemorated here in Castlebay for his film of Compton Mackenzie's 'Whisky Galore'. The film was shot on the island of Barra and released in 1949. The story is based on the real-life wreck of the SS 'Politician' and her cargo of whisky off the island of Eriskay in 1941, and the islanders' efforts to salvage the whisky.
Update: Six years on, when Mike Richardson visited Barra, it was looking a bit the worse for wear. NL6698 : Blue plaque on the bank
NL6697 : Kisimul Castle Stronghold of the once piratical MacNeil's of Barra since the 12th century. Sir Compton MacKenzie (author of 'Whisky Galore') also lived here, but the more recent incumbents are from a Canadian line of the MacNeil's.
