Newly upgraded A859 at the foot of An Cliseam
The Spinal Route (A859) runs from Stornoway in Lewis to Lochboisdale in South Uist and includes the ferry routes across the Sound of Harris and Sound of Barra. A £10m funding package was announced in 2004 by the Scottish Transport Minister, to enable the last remaining single track section of the road in Lewis and Harris to be improved to a standard two-lane single carriageway.
The intention of the planned improvements is to reduce journey times, improve road safety and to create better links to ferries and airports on the Western Isles.
The picture shows one of the two sections of A859 which was upgraded from single carriageway with passing places to a new 7.2 metre-wide carriageway.
