Dumbarton Rock: Duke of Argyll's Battery

Belhouse (or Bellhouse) Battery formerly stood on this site; it was modified in about 1795 to take heavier guns, at which time it was given its present name [OSG07, p5; MacPhail, p134-5, 186].
The background of the image shows a view northwards along the length of the Vale of Leven; Ben Lomond (NN3602) is visible on the skyline, just to the right of the middle cannon. The tall brick-red structure on the left is the shell of the huge Ballantine's distillery (see Link ).
