Standing near the mouth of the Valencia River is the 14c/15c hall house of Ballycarbery. The whole of the SE section is missing, but the remainder is almost complete. An important seat of the MacCarthy Mór, and occupied by the O'Connells as hereditary wardens, it was granted to Sir Valentine Browne in the 1590s, and re-occupied by the Macarthys during the 1640s wars. Cromwellian forces slighted the castle in 1651-52.
