Castles of Munster: Bourchiers, Limerick
Sir George Bourchier was granted this C16 five storey tower, the former seat of the Earls of Desmond when it was confiscated by the Crown in the 1580s. His descendants, later earls of Bath, held it until 1641. Also known as Castle Doon, it covered the north-east approach to Knockadoon, which was almost enclosed by Lough Gur. Nearby Black Castle protected the southern approaches.
