Only a small wedge of land intrudes into this square, and a lot of it is bare rock just above the tide mark. A feature of this coast are the 'coral beaches' which are better-developed just to the north L9123 : Coral Strand, Carrowroe/An Cheathru Rua. They are not actually corals, but calcareous algae known as Lithothamnion, whose branched hard-parts are dredged up from the shallow sea-floor and thrown ashore. Much of the beach material is small or broken shells. Similar beaches occur in the Scottish Hebrides NG2254 : Coral Beach, Skye.
