Sir John Barrow Memorial, Ulverston
The monument, in the shape of a former Eddystone Lighthouse, was erected by public subscription in 1850, on Hoad Hill.
Sir John Barrow (1764 – 1848) was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1830, and promoted British exploration, most notably of West Africa and the North Polar Region, with attempts to find a north west passage from east to west through the Canadian Arctic.
