Woolsthorpe Quarries (Harston): site of engine shed
This undistinguished little rectangle of scrubland south of the Denton to Harston road was, until 1973, the site of engine sheds and workshops which serviced the locomotives which worked the ironstone quarries off to the left (Denton No 1, 1948-74) and right (Harston Nos 2, 3, 4 and 5, the last of which was worked in 1972). An extension of the Harston lines led to quarries at Cedar Hill, beyond the Harston to Croxton Kerrial road. The shed itself is now preserved at the Rutland Railway Museum Link . Immediately north of here, in the next square, the remains of Harston Sidings, where trains for the main line, bound for Stanton Ironworks, were made up, are hidden in a relatively new plantation. See other photos nearby for more information about ironstone railways in the area.
