Household Waste Site partly covers railway remains
What is now a household waste dump by a bend in the Cottesmore to Oakham road was, for a few years either side of 1960, a busy place on the Burley and Exton Park ironstone quarry railways. The track in the cutting straight ahead was once the line to Dorman Long's Burley Quarries, which closed in 1962. There were once extensive sidings and a large engine shed belonging to the United Steel Companies' Exton Park system in the field to the left, and beyond that Cottesmore South Quarry. Quarrying at Exton Park ended in 1973: South Quarry and the sidings were used for landfill and restored to agricultural use. See other pictures nearby for more on ironstone workings in this area.
