The head of Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health, tidiness and pureness, adorns what was the Central TB Institute in Durham Street.
Former TB Institute, Durham Street, Belfast

The former Central TB Institute at 89 Durham Street. Completed in 1918 to a design by Young and Mackenzie. In later years it became the main blood donation centre for Belfast and closed when donors became unwilling to come to an area perceived as being badly affected by the bombing campaign. Media reports (February 2014) suggest that this long-vacant building, still in public ownership, might be acquired by a housing association for conversion to 14 apartments in addition to another 13 houses on the site.

The building has the following planning permission (14 February 2014) “Z/2014/0202/F Reduction in residential units from 24 to 23 (12 apartments and 11 dwellings) Demolition of modern extension to, and restoration, conversion and extension of listed building for 12 apartments and construction of 11 dwellings, car parking, landscaping and ancillary development with access arrangements from Albert Street (23 residential units in total) (Amended Plans) | 89 Durham Street Belfast BT12 4GB”.
