Basements are rare in central Belfast and are mainly confined to May Street, Donegall Square East and Chichester Street. The steps led to a (now closed) barber’s in May Street, close to the corner of Donegall Square East.

A building, known as “Clarence Chambers”, at the corner of Donegall Square East and May Street, now the subject of the following application (4 September 2018) for planning permission “LA04/2018/2271/F Extension and refurbishment of original 18 & 19 Donegall Square East Buildings. The works include the demolition of the rear return and infill buildings and the provision of a mew [sic] rear extension and link to provide accommodation for commercial use to the basement, ground floor and 4th floors, and office accommodation on the 1st,2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th floors with roof top plant. 18-19 Donegall Square East Belfast BT1 5HE”.
