Sunderland Hill, Islay
Sunderland Hill, Islay
Sunderland Hill shown as 130 metre height from the trig point.

It was on this hill that Bristol Beaufighter T.F. Mk.X NE309 of No.304 Ferry Training Unit, RAF, flew into high ground on Sunderland Hill near Bruichladdich on the 1st January 1944. The pilot was killed and the navigator injured.

Today you will see plenty of deer wandering around this hill with its grand views across the Loch Indaal towards Bowmore (where the pilot would be buried later) in this shot, or north west across Loch Gorm and then over the Atlantic.
