Once the lock is empty the bottom gates can be opened and the narrowboat emerge. Once the boat is clear of the lock the gates can be closed, the paddles lowered and the person doing this comes down the slope and steps back onto the boat.
As can be seen by the arch, there is a bridge immediately below the lock. This is a common arrangement, which makes the most of the fall in levels to minimise the “hump” of the hump-backed bridges. (Some of the most distinct humps are over parts of the canal where there is no lock.)
