Duchess of Gordon's Monument
Duchess of Gordon's Monument
Jane Duchess of Gordon, nee Lady Jane Maxwell, was a noted beauty of her day.
She is best remembered as having helped raise a regiment for the Gordon Highlanders, being recruited by her son the 5th Duke, by giving each recruit a kiss. It is said they were asked to take their enrolment guinea from between her lips with theirs. She lived and farmed here on Kinrara estate and selected this spot for her memorial. Her son, the 5th Duke, has the much more prominent monument on the crest of Torr Alvie nearby.
