No. 1 hammer, Wortley Top Forge, Stocksbridge
This is the oldest of the hammers at the forge. It is supported by two cast iron legs clamped to a massive wooden beam for rigidity. The curved piece of wood below it, and above the hammer, acts as a spring to increase the force of the hammer. The workpiece is supported by a crane.
